Rep. Jim Banks: H.R. 1 is an Unconstitutional Power-Grab by Democrats

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Jim Banks (IN-03) released the following statement regarding his NO vote on H.R. 1.

Said Rep. Banks, “Speaker Pelosi and the Democrats came to power promising transparency and power to the people.  Instead, they gave us an unconstitutional power grab for greedy politicians.  I don’t expect my political opponents to fund my campaign, but H.R. 1’s 600 percent taxpayer-matched payment to campaigns for every small-dollar donation a candidate receives will make that a reality.  I don’t expect D.C. bureaucrats to know better than Hoosiers about community voting practices and needs, but H.R. 1 would strip states of their power to monitor their own elections and hand it to Washington insiders who want universal rules that will undoubtedly enable voter fraud – both intentional and unintentional.  Politicians don’t need more power, and they surely don’t need a blank check from taxpayers.”
