Rep. Jim Banks Reacts to $22 Trillion National Debt Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Banks (IN-03) released the following statement regarding news that the federal debt surpassed $22 Trillion for the first time in history. Said Rep. Banks, “Our exploding federal debt is one of the gravest national security threats facing our Nation and has the potential to significantly harm future generations of Americans. Both Republicans and Democrats share blame in allowing this situation to grow into the crisis it is today. In Indiana, hard working men and women balance their checkbooks and make tough, fiscally prudent decisions to live within their means. So why can’t Washington? “I may be fairly new to this town, but I am not going to accept this any longer. I am fortunate enough to lead the Republican Study Committee (RSC) Budget and Spending Task Force, the only serious effort to combat America’s debt and deficit in the Congress today. As the largest caucus of conservative legislators in Congress, the RSC such plays a vital role in this debate. Over the coming weeks I will continue to work with a team of my colleagues to craft a budget that will begin to repair the damage of our debt. Americans everywhere are sick of Congress’ irresponsibility and the time for action is now.” ### Congressman Jim Banks represents Indiana’s 3rd Congressional District and serves on the House Armed Services Committee, Committee on Veterans Affairs, and Committee on Education and the Workforce.
