Banks Supports Religious Freedom, Democracy in Bangladesh

Congressman Jim Banks (IN-03) today spoke at an event at the Hudson Institute entitled “Stability, Democracy, and Islamism in Bangladesh.” Banks recently introduced House Resolution 1156, which expresses concern about the threat posed to democracy and the democratic process by radical groups operating in Bangladesh. The legislation also calls on the United States Agency for International Development and the U.S. State Department to refrain from any partnerships or funding arrangements from any organization affiliated with these radical groups. The full text of the bill can be found here. “Bangladesh is a booming democratic country in the South Asia region with a growing presence on the global stage,” said Banks. “However, Islamist groups like Jamaat-e-Islami threaten the country’s prosperity. The United States should support Bangladesh’s efforts to combat these radical Islamist groups and affirm the rights of religious minorities.” ### |
