Banks Statement on Government Reopening, Suspension of Medical Device Tax, CHIP Reauthorization

Congressman Jim Banks (IN-03) today released the following statement after Congress passed legislation to reopen the federal government, reauthorize the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) for six years and suspend the medical device tax for two years:

"This shutdown was reckless and unnecessary. I am glad Senate Democrats have decided to reopen the government and get back to work.

“This legislation is important for northeast Indiana. It stops the job-killing medical device tax for two years, which is vital to employers and workers in our region. The legislation also extends CHIP funding for six years, an important program that serves 13,155 children in Indiana’s Third District.”

The House passed this legislation 266 to 150 after the Senate reached an agreement earlier today. The legislation, which will fund the federal government until February 8, now heads to President Trump’s desk for signature.
