Banks Votes to Impeach Secretary Mayorkas

Today, Rep. Jim Banks voted in favor of H. Res. 863, a resolution impeaching Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. Rep. Banks is a cosponsor of this legislation.

Said Rep. Jim Banks: Today I voted to impeach Secretary Mayorkas for aiding and abetting an invasion at our southern border. While I am disappointed this measure did not pass, fighting to secure our border remains my top priority.  Under Mayorkas’s command, more illegal immigrants have crossed our southern border than the entire population of Indiana and Mayorkas admitted to releasing more than 85% of those into communities across the country. Mayorkas has financed this invasion by redirecting hundreds of millions of dollars in FEMA funding intended for Americans facing disasters to provide free housing and other accommodations for illegal immigrants. He is unfit to lead and must be held accountable!”

Background:

  • In April of 2022, Rep. Jim Banks led more than 130 House Republicans in warning Secretary Mayorkas that Republicans would be forced to hold him accountable if the Secretary continued refusing to enforce the law.
  • Following months of new illegal crossing records, Banks wrote an op-ed in July of 2022 calling for the impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas.
