Wall Street Journal: Liz Cheney and the See-No-Hypocrisy Democrats

The Jan. 6 committee is anything but a fair and neutral finder of fact.

Rep. Liz Cheney’s defense of the Jan. 6 Select Committee leaves readers with a fundamental misimpression about the committee and its work (“The Jan. 6 Committee Won’t Be Intimidated,” op-ed, Feb. 11).

The committee is anything but a fair and neutral finder of fact. Because House Speaker Nancy Pelosi took the unprecedented step of rejecting Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s chosen slate of Republicans, the committee lacks any semblance of objectivity. It is populated instead with members motivated by political vendettas—a bias that will ensure one-sided findings and distorted conclusions.

Without any check, the committee is running roughshod over civil liberties. Outside of its main charge, the committee is investigating political activities protected by the First Amendment. Its chairman is subpoenaing swaths of private telephone records—and imposing gag orders on telecom companies so they don’t tell their customers—and running the data through terrorism-related software. The committee leaks cherry-picked information, and even alters and misrepresents nonpublic information to impute wrongdoing by Republicans.

These tactics should worry all Americans. But Ms. Cheney and her Democratic enablers are blinded by their hatred for President Donald Trump. And they refuse to see the hypocrisy in their actions. Ms. Cheney serves with two Democrats who objected to Electoral College results in past elections, even as they chastise Republicans for later doing the same. In fact, Democrats have objected to every Republican presidential victory this century.

The Republicans who objected last year did so because they believed the state officials who circumvented their state legislatures to change voting procedures violated constitutional requirements. If Ms. Cheney is as sincere about “fidelity to the Constitution and the rule of law” as she claims, readers may wonder why she applies it so selectively.

There are also still unanswered questions about the Capitol’s security in advance of Jan. 6, 2021. Tellingly, Ms. Cheney ignores this topic. Readers should know Ms. Cheney and the Democrats’ real mission is to continue attacking Mr. Trump ahead of 2024.
